Sleep is No Escape -- New Lovecraftian Horror Image Gallery

We approached this new series, "Sleep is No Escape" wanting to explore horror themes from the Lovecraftian tradition -- with a little HR Giger if he flesh-melded with a demon-possessed Andrew Wyeth, all slathered in chicken skin. These pieces were bounced back and forth between Ideogram and Gimp until they were moist and scabby. Some came together quickly. "The Garden of Heavenly Dismay" turned out to be massive and took several weeks!

Purpose

Daydream Misfit is a website and blog for surreal and offbeat experimental writing and design.

Over the years, I've created hundreds of handmade drawings and paintings. Now I'm exploring AI (typically Ideogram, heavily edited in Gimp) as a new tool, wrestling with the implications and leaning into the weirdness.

I'm spectrumy. I'm restless creatively and all over the place. Algorithms don't like that I'm eclectic. But I'm not a brand. I'm not a niche. And I'm not going to change.

The Daydream Misfit project is my way to engage in digital design series that explore surreal, emotionally ambiguous visual storytelling that blends dream logic, symbolic figures, and quiet psychological tension.

I embrace colorful, trippy, absurd, raw, and authentic expression. Welcome to my sketchbook, diary, confessional booth, and curiosity shop. Expect fragmented dream-world narratives and tangents. I'm glad you could make it, and I hope you'll stay.

They call me sashimi, and I still dream of the sea.

When you're alive, the pressure of the deep and dark waters are the boundaries of your reality. After that you forget survival. What will become of me? I'm naked and exposed, skinned and flayed and fileted on a bamboo mat.

Don't get me wrong. In this place, I've been treated with the utmost respect. One has to admire a chef's craft. And his skill with a blade so sharp it seems it could slice between atoms. Still, a human's eyes are dead and impossibly sad.

I sense that seaweed is still near, at least. Ginger, whoever she is. Have you met wasabi? You don't get long to get to know one another.

I'm beautiful now, stripped down to my marbled, translucent soul. My friends wouldn't know me. I have thousands of children who will never know I spent my last minutes as a piece of Art. I don't know how to feel about that. Not bad, not good. I'm indifferent at this point to the idea of purpose.

Sure, there's something bigger than us. Sometimes it's just an out-of-focus giant with a rumbling stomach in a restaurant at the end of time.

"You have to try this."

Oops. Thought I'd be swimming forever. Sooner or later, the chopsticks close around everyone.

caution radiation pink in the hallway while the walls sweat pink static and the television keeps speaking in numbers and somebody left their teeth in the pink and the pigeons outside are glowing broken reactors and the moon medically incorrect everyone keeps smiling too long and the geiger counter chatters like angry insects trapped in a soup can while the vending machine hums with impossible confidence and the air tastes like batteries, copper wet concrete shatter and mirrors burst inward now there are too many versions of the room standing around pretending not to notice each other while the chandelier swings like a nervous pendulum above the broken glass carpet and somebody keeps whispering from inside the wallpaper every photographer in the house has the same unfamiliar face and cracks in glass spread like roads on a pink map leading loud, electric, permanently wrong night peels sharply sinister roots crawling through the basement walls under pink floorboards into the wiring and the pinking pipes sleep machinery trees closer every night like listening for something buried deep beneath the house and the dirt keeps breathing in slow damp lungfuls and the garden moved three feet overnight and now pink veins in your hands look suspiciously botanical and the whole world smells like rain, old bark, wet soil, and enormous patient wires convocation and every pink body in the parking lot is occupied by draped, silent, infection and faintly thumping steaming candles bent sideways in a music nobody can hear and the spaces between us disappear into impossible dark architecture whispering movement and a pink bell keeps ringing underwater clouds and the figures at the far end of the cult continue taking notes with eyes and far too many hands while your name passes slowly through the crowd like an administrative error candy cane and the entire kitchen glows pink peppermint red dead snow outside falls upward past the windows why children keep laughing from rooms that definitely do not contain children feet and tree ornaments twitch whenever nobody is smiling directly and flesh smells aggressively of sugar, burnt wires, cinnamon, and courtly disaster the striped candy hook
